Project Details

The project is parceled in many different ways. For instance, an individual could choose to tackle a certain geographical part of the Eastern Washington University campus: a building that fascinates them, a dorm where important events have taken place, etc. Or they could focus on a theoretical reading of everything on campus: what haunts a feminist reading of the library? Williamson Hall? The tech building? What about a Marxist reading? Someone could focus on student profiles, mirroring the EWU Eagle (student) success profiles. Someone could focus on oral histories of a particular demographic. Someone could focus on a broader social movement that interests them and connect the physical features of the space to the goals of this movement. There could be space for more creative interactions with the text. Maybe the space is haunted by a fictional character that follows you around.

Materials/Tools Needed
  • Online QR code generator: https://www.qr-code-generator.com/

  • Any kind of web-hosting platform. (Since the signs will have QR codes on them, the links would not necessarily have to be pretty and could conceivably be free WordPress links.)

  • Laminated signs with the physical QR codes printed on them. Potentially wire stakes to implant the signs into the ground like campaign materials.

Ethical Considerations
  • Handling sensitive information through interviews: ensuring anonymity of personal identity / maintaining lines of communication so participants can retract information at any point in the process.

  • Presenting potentially triggering information and stories in a compassionate, thoughtful manner. The two-step process of encountering the physical marker and choosing to engage digitally provides a layer of consent.

  • Accessibility for the project itself. Particularly if this is going to be a critique of the accessibility of the space, it will be imperative to make sure the project is as accommodating as possible and doesn’t make assumptions. When possible, including auditory versions of text, etc.
